Helpful tips
Tip 1: These Shortcuts Will Help You Make This Spooky Recipe Faster!
Your Halloween party guests are arriving in an hour? Got it.
- Microwave the chocolate instead of doing the double boiler method.
- Prep the white chocolate pretzels first, so that it has enough time to dry before you assemble the spider web.
- To help the chocolate set faster, put the white chocolate pretzels in the fridge. After you assemble the entire spider web, you can also cool it in the fridge so the chocolate sets faster.
Tip 2: Let The White Chocolate Pretzels FULLY DRY. (Do NOT Skip This Step)
In a nutshell, there are two parts to this structure:
- Spider web (white chocolate covered pretzels)
- Base (dark chocolate circle)
The Base acts like a foundation for the structure and fuses with the spider web, so when you pick it up it doens’t fall apart. The spider web itself isn’t strong enough.
Allowing the white chocolate to dry first, gives it time to bind better to the pretzel and then later to the dark chocolate.
Tip 3: Don’t Just Throw All The Pretzels Into the White Chocolate, As I Did!
Don’t do it. I did it. And, it was messy. In my initial recipe test, I threw a handful of pretzel sticks into the bowl. The bowl was so crowded that the pretzels didn’t get a good coat of chocolate.
Instead, Dip one pretzel in the melted white chocolate at a time.
Tip 4: How to NOT burn chocolate in the Microwave
Microwave the chocolate in 30-second intervals. Once the chocolate burns it’s too stiff to use and you will need to throw it out and start over.
I find that it takes longer to melt white chocolate compared to dark chocolate.
For this recipe, I used Ghirardelli dark and white chocolate chips. It’s such forgiving chocolate and it easily melts in the microwave.
Tip 5: Don’t Stack the Spider Webs on Top of Each Other
When you plate your final Halloween treat give the spider webs their own space. I like to plate them on a large cookie sheet.
Tip 6: How to Prevent clumps of white chocolate on the pretzels
I tried a knife, a spoon, and an icing spatula. The icing spatula was the best because it’s easier to lift the pretzels out of the bowl without a ton of icing stuck to it.
Another tip is to scrape any excess white chocolate off on the side of the bowl before you lift the pretzel out of the bowl.

Halloween Pretzels (Chocolate Spider Web)
Ingredients
For the Spider Web Frame
- 30 pretzel sticks
- ¾ cup white chocolate chips
For the Spider Web Base
- ½ cup dark chocolate chips
For The Spider
- 10 pretzel sticks
- ½ cup dark chocolate chips
Equipments
- 1 spider candy mold
Instructions
For The Spider Web Frame (White Chocolate Pretzels):
- Prep baking sheet: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. (Tip: tape the parchment paper to secure it to the tray.)
- Melt white chocolate: Add white chocolate chips to a microwave safe bowl. Microwave in 30 second intervals until melted. (Tip: After every interval, stir with a spoon.)
- Coat pretzels: Add 1 pretzel to the bowl at a time. Fully coat the pretzel in white chocolate. (Tip: Scrape the icing spatula against the side of the bowl to remove excess chocolate.) Using the icing spatula, add the pretzel to the parchment paper. Repeat until all pretzels are coated. Place the baking sheet in the fridge. Let the white chocolate fully set.
- Cut pretzels: Remove the white chocolate pretzels from the fridge. Cut 15 pretzel sticks in half. Cut 15 pretzel sticks into 4 equal sections.
For The Spider Web Base (Dark Chocolate Circles):
- Prep baking sheet: On parchment paper, draw 6 circles that are 3.5 inches in diameter. (Tip: I like using a circle cookie cutter to keep it consistent, but you can eyeball it). Flip the parchment paper and tape it to the baking sheet.
- Melt dark chocolate chips: Add dark chocolate chips to a microwave safe bowl. Microwave in 30 second intervals until melted. (Tip: After every interval, mix with a spoon.)
- Build the dark chocolate base: Using a spoon, add 1 tablespoon of melted dark chocolate to each circle on the parchment paper. Move the spoon in circular motions to create a chocolate circle. (Tip: add any remaining chocolate to each circle, a thicker chocolate base will support the spider web frame better).
- While the dark chocolate is still wet: add the spider web frame (ie. white chocolate pretzels.) to the base. Watch the recipe video to see how.
For The Spider:
- Prep the pretzel sticks: Coarsely chop the pretzel sticks.
- Melt dark chocolate chips: Add dark chocolate chips to a microwave safe bowl. Microwave in 30 second intervals until melted. (Tip: After every interval, mix with a spoon.)
- Add melted chocolate to spider mold: Using a small spoon, pour melted chocolate into each section of the spider mold so it’s filled halfway.
- Drop in the pretzels: Using your fingers, add a few pieces of the coarsely chopped pretzel sticks to each spider.
- More chocolate please: Using a small spoon, pour melted chocolate into each section of the spider mold until it reaches the top.
- Even out the chocolate: Gently shake the spider mold so that the chocolate evenly spreads out. (Use: I like to use a toothpick to remove any remaining air bubbles).
- Let it cool: Place in fridge to cool.
