Chocolate covered strawberries are perfect for special occasions. The best part? You can easily make this fun treat at home with two ingredients: fresh strawberries and chocolate. You don't need fancy equipment either.
Check out my recipe tips below to learn how to make homemade chocolate covered strawberries and how to avoid common mistakes.
Tips On How To Make Chocolate Covered Strawberries
Tip 1: Dry The Strawberries And Keep The Stems On
Carefully wash the strawberries so the stems stay on. Use a paper towel to dry it off. If the strawberry is still wet, the chocolate won’t stick.
Tip 2: Use Parchment Paper
Take the extra step to line a baking sheet with parchment paper, which allows you to easily remove the chocolate covered strawberries from the pan.
Tip 3: Best Way To Melt Chocolate
Instead of using the microwave, I prefer the double boiler method since it gives you more control when melting chocolate. It’s like melting your chocolate over a bath of warm water! Be careful with your chocolate as it burns quickly (see tip 4 below).
To make a double boiler, fill a small pot with water and simmer it on low heat. Steam should be rising from the water. If the water is boiling, it’s too hot. Place a small heat proof bowl on top of the pot. Add chocolate to the bowl and stir using a small metal spoon until melted (around 2-3 minutes). It should be a smooth, liquidy consistency. The lumps should be gone and it’s easy to stir.
Tip 4: What Does Burnt Chocolate Look Like?
I have burned chocolate countless times. Burnt chocolate is difficult to stir and starts to form clumps. If you encounter this situation, it’s best to melt a fresh batch of chocolate.
Tip 5 : Hold The Stem When Dipping The Strawberry
Using your fingers, hold the strawberry by the stem by pinching the leaves together. Then, dip it in the chocolate. This allows you to cover the strawberry with more chocolate.
Tip 6: Use A Rolling Pin To Crush Toppings
You don’t need fancy tools to crush stuff. After I scrape the white cream from the Oreo cookies I throw it in a cup with a handle, like a mason jar, then I smash it with the flat edge of a rolling pin. This also works for almonds, cashews, etc. I like using a cup instead of a bowl because it contains all the crushed bits.
Best Toppings For Chocolate Dipped Strawberries
-
coconut flakes
-
crushed Oreo cookies
-
crushed salted roasted almonds
-
crushed salted roasted cashews
Best Chocolate For Making Chocolate Covered Strawberries
I love using Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate for chocolate covered pretzels and fruits. It’s smooth and I find it doesn’t burn as easily as chocolate chips.
How Long Do Chocolate Covered Strawberries Last?
Chocolate covered strawberries are best served the same day (after the chocolate firms up in the fridge).
If you store it in an airtight container in the fridge, it’ll still be good for a day or two. Do not pile the strawberries up in a container. Lay it flat in the container so the chocolate coating doesn't get damaged.

Servings: 24 strawberries
Calories: 69kcal
Ingredients
- 1 lb strawberries with stem on around 24 strawberries
- 10.5 ounces Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate
Instructions
- Prep the strawberries: Line a baking sheet with paper towel. Carefully wash the strawberries while keeping the stems on. Place strawberries on the baking sheet and dry them off using paper towel.
- Prep the toppings (optional): Using a small knife, remove white cream from Oreo cookies. Place Oreo cookies in a cup and use the end of a rolling pin to crush it. Place almonds in another cup and use the same method. (See Notes)
- Line another baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Melt the chocolate: Simmer water in a small pot on low heat. Add chocolate to a heat proof bowl. Place bowl on top of the pot. Using a metal spoon, slowly stir the chocolate until melted (around 2-3 minutes). It should be a smooth, liquid consistency. If the chocolate seems dry and difficult to stir, then it’s overheated and you need to redo this step. (See notes)
- Time to dip the strawberries! Grab the strawberry by the stem and gently dip it into the melted chocolate until it covers ¾ of the strawberry. It’s helpful to rotate the strawberry.
- Place chocolate covered strawberries on parchment paper. Leave 2 inches between each strawberry. Optional step is to sprinkle toppings on the chocolate covered strawberry.
- Refrigerate for 20 minutes or until chocolates firms up.
